How to Remove Silicone from Tiles
Old or worn silicone around tiles can trap dirt and moisture, leading to mould and weakening the seal. Follow these steps to remove silicone from tiles effectively and prepare the area for a fresh, clean application.
Step 1: Gather Necessary Tools and Materials
You’ll Need:
- Utility knife or razor blade scraper
- Plastic scraper or putty knife
- Silicone remover (optional)
- Rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits
- Soft cloths or paper towels
- Safety gloves
Step 2: Soften the Silicone
If the silicone is old or particularly stubborn, using a silicone remover can make the job easier.
- Apply the remover according to the product instructions, allowing it to sit for the recommended time.
- Alternatively, rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits can soften silicone and may be applied with a cloth.
Step 3: Cut Along the Edges of the Silicone
Using a utility knife or razor blade scraper, carefully cut along the edges of the silicone to separate it from the tile surface.
- Hold the blade at a slight angle to avoid damaging the tiles.
- Gently slice along both sides of the silicone, getting as close to the tile as possible.
Step 4: Peel Away the Silicone
Once you’ve cut along the edges, use a plastic scraper or putty knife to lift the silicone away.
- Gently pry under the silicone strip, peeling it off in one piece if possible.
- Remove any remaining chunks by hand or with the scraper.
Step 5: Remove Residual Silicone
After the main silicone is removed, there may be a thin layer of residue left.
- Dampen a cloth with rubbing alcohol or mineral spirits.
- Wipe down the area to dissolve and lift any remaining silicone residue.
- For stubborn spots, reapply the silicone remover or rub with a soft cloth until clean.
